Just like all of the people who were bored at home for the past year, because of the pandemic, I consumed a lot of media and therefore, watched a lot of TV shows. However, since then, there

is only one show I keep wanting to rewatch. Schitt’s Creek was a show I had heard a lot about, and after a glowing recommendation from a history teacher, I finally decided to see what all the praise was about and in doing so, I found my new favorite show.

The witty sitcom, created by father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who also star in the show, follows the story of the former filthy-rich Rose family, who have been scammed out of their money and forced to move to a run-down town in the middle of nowhere- Schitt’s Creek. The eccentric family consists of Moira and Johnny Rose, and their children Alexis and David. These lovable characters are played by Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Dan Levy, respectively. Over the course of 6 seasons, the family comes to terms with their financial and social situation and starts to accept their place in the town, while growing closer together and bettering each other and their community. Every member of the family, in their own way, evolves from their vain and materialistic personalities, to caring and genuine people who are exactly who they want to be. They grow into their full potential by finding love, pursuing their passions, or just getting to know each other better. The Roses realize they weren’t actually happy living their lavish, but lonely, lifestyle. Losing their money was the best thing that could’ve happened to them. Alexis and David learned about the value of hard work through examples of their own pursuits. Moira and Johnny learn about the significance of their friends and family. The show leaves its viewers feeling good, whether it be through expressions of comedy, romance, or other heartfelt relationships.

Schitt’s Creek sends an abundance of positive messages to its viewers and has a variety of diversity and representation to make its viewers feel seen and understood. The show has an inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community that doesn’t feel too forced or preachy, and instead feels casual and belonging. David Rose is openly pansexual and in the later seasons, there is a even a character who discovers his sexuality and goes through some challenges that could be very relatable and comforting to viewers in similar situations.

In the documentary about the show’s final season and its impact, called Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt’s Creek Farewell, the cast reads an emotional letter from a group of mothers who have children in the LGBTQ+ community, talking about how much the show’s representation has impacted them and their families. Pictured on the left is the scene from the heart-warming documentary where the cast learns how significant and beneficial their work has been. The documentary also showcases the cast’s experiences with a pride parade and seeing in-person some of the people whose lives they have touched and the difference they have made.

Overall, the show has smart humor, and it is a gratifying experience to watch the characters change and become better versions of themselves. I highly recommend watching the show to anyone, because I am sure it has something that will appeal to everyone. The documentary is also a must-watch after finishing the show, since it gives the viewers an inside look into the thought process of the actors, how they approached their characters, the audition and filming process, among many other topics that will enhance your experience of watching the show. Schitt’s Creek has an amazing rewatchability and I find more reasons to call it my favorite show with every episode I watch- and rewatch!
