Afghanistan Overview
Afghanistan is a country located in Southern/Central Asia. For decades, the people of Afghanistan have been suffering. Whether it be foreign powers sending their military, or domestic extremist groups, Afghanistan has been tirelessly thrown into war. The removal of American troops from Afghan soil has led to a Taliban takeover of the country. The Taliban are an extremist group, originating from Afghanistani rebel forces, who have a history of oppressive laws originating from distinctly inaccurate interpretations of Sharia Law.
The Timeline
April 14, 2021; President Biden announced the official removal of American troops from Afghanistan.
May 2021; The Taliban begin to gain territory in Northern Afghanistan.
July 2021; US troops leave their key war hub, Bagram Airfield.
Early-August 2021; The Taliban continue to take over areas in Afghanistan, now gaining power over cities with ease.
Mid-August 2021; Ghani, the Afghani President, flees the country. The Taliban come in and seize control of the capital city, Kabul.
August 17, 2021 - Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, promises inclusive government and rights that stand within the Taliban belief.
August 26, 2021 - Blasts in Kabul have killed at least sixty US and Afghan individuals
What is happening now?
As of the time this article is being written, the Taliban have gained control of greater than 70% of Afghanistan. Previous Taliban laws have been brought back, along with Taliban soldiers with guns to “enforce” these laws. Afghanistan’s airports have become flooded with panicked people trying to leave the country. Chaos and attacks at the Airports and other areas have led to more than sixty deaths. The US is currently working to help evacuate American citizens and Afghani people. At least 28,000 Afghani people have left the country, and tens of thousands more are still waiting. Pakistan and Iran have taken in the most refugees, followed by Germany, Turkey, Austria, and more.
In the case of oppressed women, many Taliban laws have returned. While there are still some women who are permitted to work and study, the vast majority have been sent home. A Taliban spokesperson claimed equality for all. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. Women are again being forced to cover up, whereas before, a simple headscarf with some hair showing was appropriate. Women’s rights are something the Afghani people, regardless of gender, accept and support. However, with the Taliban, things may no longer be as simple.
What can we do to help?
There are a variety of groups on social media, or the internet, with petitions and fundraisers to aid the Afghani people. UNICEF has many campaigns working to help those in Afghanistan as well. There are many other organizations you can donate to as well, such as the International Rescue Committee or Women for Women International. You can also sign petitions and call on your government to help in aiding and welcoming refugees. Even if you can’t donate, spreading accurate information and educating your community is just as helpful. Hopefully, one day, Afghanistan will be free.
